PostSubject: Bush's speech on March 15   Thu 16 Mar 18:10

President George Bush gave a splendid speech in Washington to honour the Hungarian National Day (15th March) with the slight mistake of confusing the revolution of March 15, 1848 with that of October 23, 1956.

Quote:
President Attends Celebration of Hungarian Contributions to Democracy
Statutory Hall
United States Capitol
Washington, D.C.
5:45 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Please be seated. Mr. Speaker, thank you for having me here in this beautiful Capitol to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. (...)

full speech here

How charming of Mr Bush to be commemorating the revolution of 1956 when everybody else is celebrating the revolution of 1848. So what? Hungarians fought against foreign oppression - in 1848 against the Austrian Empire, in 1956 against the Soviet Union, but does it matter at all? They lost in both cases...

I wonder if he’ll ever get to hear about this tiny detail overlooked in his heart-raising speech. I very much doubt it - the White House seems to have extremely thick walls impenetrable for news coming from abroad.

Razz

There is also a funny speech of the US president in the hungarian animation movie : 8ker.
In the movie the US wanted to bomb Budapest because of a new oil source in the 8ker. (8th discrict). They bombed Bucarest (capital of Romania).

This whole incident of Bush just shows the ignorance the American administration towards smaller nations.
By the way, not just smaller.
It was a huge blunder coming from Bush for the Hungarians. We celebrate freedom on both occasion that is correct, but that is not the reason for the mixup, neither an acceptable explanation.
Bush was just being Bush.

I wonder who does his speeches.
Has anyone working in his team some formal knowledge that includes european history (when I say "european" I don't mean only UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain), I mean whole Europe)?
