megismerhetem." (I’m glad to meet you.)

- Shake hands again when leaving the meeting.

Local lore says that Surd, population 650, produces enough Christmas trees to supply half of the capital of Budapest's two million residents.

Hungarian recipes

Hello

How about sharing Hungarian recipes?

I’ll start with the Soup Gulyás - probably one of the most famous Hungarian dishes. Although Hungarians eat soups as starters, this is a rather rich soup so you might want to skip main dish and pass straight to the dessert (that’s what I normally do ).

Soup Gulyás

Ingredients:

2 lb (about 1 kg) Beef Chuck

1 tsp Salt

2 Onions

2 tbl Lard or other Shortening

2 tbl Sweet Hungarian Paprika, (Imported)

2 Bay Leaves

Where to ski in Hungary

As a rule don’t choose Hungary for your ski holidays. The highest part of Hungary being at 1014 meters (Kékestető) there is but little chance of finding snow sufficient for skiing. However Hungary does have a couple of ski pistes at various locations so if it’s snowing and you’re out for a bit of winter fun - why not pop out in the hill sides.

You’ll be amazed to find that there are 30 ski slopes in Hungary (at least I was) of which most of them are equipped ...

Hi all,

I don't know if you have the so called "right-hand rule" in your country but in Hungary this is the rule regulating traffic in most of the little streets.

Whenever there are no traffic lights or signs controlling priority in a crossing the "right-hand" rule is to be applied: traffic coming from your right has priority over you.

In practice this means you'll have to slow down anyway when approaching a crossing since you cannot tell whether the road crossing yours will ...

Does anybody have any info wrt bringing a motorcycle into the country? I own a motorcycle and am considering to bring it to Hungary. Since I won't be registered in my country anymore, I'm not sure if I can keep my license plate, so I'd need a Hungarian one.

I just found this : an exhibition at the Budapest history museum.

I found interesting the story of this queen. She got married when she was 10 and finished as a governor of Holland

Reading the article reminded me nice wanderings in Hungary, Esztergom

Eger

And many others, but enough for tonight

Stringent EU rules may force small holding poppy-seed growers to grow their “MAK” (Hungarian for poppy see used in sweet pastries) illegally. Of the 15 varieties grown in CEE and Russia only one has been permitted by the drug-conscious EU. The only poppy variety passed by the EU decision is very scarce in the CEE region. (...) The century-old Hungarian varieties would now be grown illegally and small holders would face similar legal action faced by illegal Colombian opium farmers. (..) The poppy ...

We went to see the Veszprém zoo today. Unfortunately we left our camera at home so I have no photos to share with you.

I was told that this zoo was quite remarkable in Hungary because it had been built in a little forest valley and that it resembled a safari park. Who ever is spreading this rumour has obviously never been to a safari park... At first I was rather struck by the sight of the little cages hosting huge depressed apes. All those iron bars and wire fences made me think of a concentration ...
