European Capital of Culture - Budapest

According to the decision of the European Parliament, a German and a Hungarian city will be assigned Cultural Capital of Europe for 2010. In Hungary, there are seven cities competing for the title, among them is Budapest.

The city of Budapest has adopted 5 main projects all of them relating to the Danube. By utilising the Danube as creative, useable, mouldable space, and with the help of new constructions, events, installations, actions and celebrations, ...

You've probably heard: Hungary's Economy Ministry has put up an online poll to determine the name for the planned new M0-bridge over the Danube, which is the closing section of the outer M0 motorway ring around Budapest. Now there is still time to vote, but I suggest you watch Stephen Colbert explain how to vote for him: The Colbert riport.

BTW Colbert fans did a pretty good job, won the first round for Colbert and he's still in the lead: http://www.m0hid.gov.hu/toplista.

I take it that everyone living in or passing through Budapest has already had the pleasure of bumping into big attractive cows, coming in different shapes and size. Yes, they are everywhere, invading parks, squares and crossroads. One of them even had the audaciousness to turn his massive back on the Basilica. Well that one didn't last for long, a group of infuriated believers carried him off to demonstrate the meaning of respecting religion. Say, weren't we boasting about religious tolerance ...

white Budapest - from salt?

Does anybody know why all the roads and pavements of Budapest are white? Is it white everywhere? Or just where I live and work? I’ve been told that it’s because of the salt (I didn’t lick it to testify) but it’s so evenly spread that it’s really hard to conceive how it was done. And besides, why pour salt on the roads when there’s no snow? And I don’t think we’ll have any very soon - not in minus 10 degrees.

Last Saturday Andres suggested a great way to visit the Opera house (the one on the Andrássy street). There are guided tours each day starting at 3 pm and 4 pm (I think) but it costs 2000 HUF just to be shown around - although one must admit that both the building itself and the interior design are magnificent. Anyway Andres said that it's much cheaper and probably more entertaining to buy low-price tickets (starting from 600 HUF) for any performance. You get to walk around, admire the place ...

Originally we planned to take a sledge but then we realised we didn't have any and as I read there was only 15 cm of snow I didn't think there was a point of buying one.
Instead of a white Christmas it looks like we're going to have an all too white New Year's Eve in most of Hungary. It's definitely white in Budapest:

Actually, it looks rather scary - the Middle and Eastern parts of Hungary are marked as not to be undertaken by car on Index (Not that train would be much of an option - if they are not cancelled then count 3 hours for 30 minutes.) All this is pretty worrying. I've got some friends coming from Kaposvár... I would be much reassured if ...
