Hi all,

I'm going for the first time to Budapest from April 9 till April 13.

I will just be a short visit, so our intentions are to visit the best current clubs/parties going on over there.

Does anyone have suggestions?

Also heard they have poolparties in Budapest, does anyone have more info on this?

Thanks in advance!

Just read the news about the riots this night.

Beyond the seriousness of these events, it sounds to me that there is a high tension in political (or social , or ... way of life ...don't know how to call it) Hungarian life and people's behavior.

I wonder how a simple document (despite its contents which I won't judge) can make hundreds (thousands ?) people get off and join in a protest at the same point in so few time. Sounds to me like it might have been prepared some times ago.

I've already mentioned in a previous posting that Hungarians had a funny way of interpreting EU regulations. Here's another lovely example: registration tax for foreign cars brought to and sold in Hungary.

Having joined the EU the Hungarian government could no longer make car importers pay tolls. Oh dear, what a loss of income. Well trust Hungarians to come up with an ingenious idea. No tolls permitted? Ok then, we'll call it something different. How about... say... registration ...

Scientists agreed that a "planet" is defined as a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to produce a nearly round shape (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

The Big Book (A Nagy Könyv) is a similar book competition as was lanced by the BBC in 2003 (there it was called The Big Read). The Hungarian competition was started with the 1st of March and will end on the 17th of December.

Up until 23 April everybody had the opportunity to vote for the best Hungarian and the best foreign books. As a result a TOP 100 list was put together, composed of 50 Hungarian and 50 foreign books. (I do believe that only novelistic books were aloud.)

It's perfectly off topic, but I've seen in the news that there were riots around Paris. It looks very bad from over here. Is it very worrying where you live too? I'm very concerned for you all.

This money forgery business reminds me of a recent story. I met two friends a week or so ago, and one of them invited us to a café, she was about to pay but didn't have any change so the other one got out her purse and handed over a rectangular object saying it was the new 500 Ft coin. My eyes nearly popped out in amazement. As far as knew 500 Ft only existed in form of banknotes and this rectangular coin looked more like a souvenir medal. It should be added that this girl with the funny coin ...

Just read this article on United Nations refugee agency:

Quote:BUDAPEST, Hungary, November 1 (UNHCR) – Tormented, ostracized, shamed and illiterate Azita may be – but her will is unbroken. This is how she made it to Hungary, where she was granted asylum based on the domestic violence and social exclusion she suffered as a woman, and the lack of any protection by the authorities in her home country. (...) In considering her claim well-founded and granting her refugee status, the Hungarian ...

The Europol, the Hungarian and the Romanian police raided an illegal money making manufacture (one of the biggest in EU) near Budapest, at Erdokertes.

The suprise in the story is that the criminals made fake 1 and 2 euros instead of the big notes. The police said that making good fake notes are expensive and risky. Making fake coins is easier and nearly impossible to detect at shopping. The fake coins will not be accepted by coin-machines and because of the techonlogy used at manufacturing ...

For those of you who are not familiar with the Hungarian language the article reports on the result of a prosecution of Invitel (Internet provider in Hungary) before the Hungarian Advertising Association. Invitel was accused by the Tűsarok (Spike-heel) women’s ...
